Yanukovych wants Ukraine to host 2022 Winter Games

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has proposed staging the 2022 Winter Olympics in the Carpathian mountains in the west of the country, the presidential press service said on Thursday, May 27.

"If we decide to initiate this (the Olympic Games in Ukraine), we will start working on the official nomination of our country as the holder of the Winter Olympic Games in Carpathians," Yanukovych was quoted as saying in Lviv in western Ukraine.

Ukraine's Independence Day will have firework display, no parades

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has ordered preparations for events to mark the 19th anniversary of Ukraine's independence.

The head of state signed a decree to that effect on Tuesday, April 27.

The document says that the staff of the organizing committee headed by Prime Minister Mykola Azarov on the celebration of Independence Day on August 24 should be approved within ten days.

The organizing committee was ordered to approve within two months an action plan on preparing for and celebrating the anniversary of Ukraine's independence.

Ukraine proposes EU take additional visa facilitation measures

Ukraine has called on EU member countries to provide direct access for Ukrainians to consular institutions to obtain visas, exclude the cases of unjustified visa denials, and significantly increase the number of multiple entry visas they issue.

The Ukrainian delegation proposed such additional measures on the implementation of the Ukraine-EU visa facilitation agreement at a meeting of the joint committee of experts on the implementation of the mentioned agreement, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's press service reported.

Ukraine has signed a plan of cooperation between the Foreign Ministries of the CIS countries for 2010.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kostiantyn Hryschenko signed 16 out of 21 documents put forward during a meeting of the Council of the CIS Foreign Ministers in Moscow on March 26, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's press service said.

In particular, the minister signed a plan of cooperation between the Foreign Ministries of the CIS member states for 2010, and supported a decision to improve work on the plan for the implementation of the concept of CIS development.

Kyiv hoping for visa regime simplification agreement with Canada

The Ukrainian authorities hope to conclude several important agreements when Canada's prime minister visits Ukraine, in particular, a deal on visa regime simplification, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said during a meeting with Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine Daniel Caron on Tuesday.

The information and mass media department of the Secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine said that according to the Ukrainian prime minister, Ukraine is ready to develop cooperation with Canada and is happy to welcome the Canadian prime minister.
